Meet Murray Turrell, Construction Supervisor

We’re proud of all of our staff, today we have a 250+ strong workforce not including our tradies and they’re literally the team behind thousands of homes right across NSW. Today we’re chatting with one, Construction Supervisor and employee of 8 years, Murray Turrell. Find out why he has stayed with a team that keeps him so busy!

What’s a Construction Supervisor?

Murray: We’re the one who checks the job runs efficiently, we sort logistics for the different trades people, building materials and make sure construction work is completed to the standard that McDonald Jones is known for. Most importantly we let the customer know where their construction is up to along the way.

How do you keep on top of all the jobs?

Murray: We often have 15-20 jobs on at one time. But McDonald Jones have thorough processes to keep our teams up to date and we all share a plan with in-depth details on the finishes to be included. McDonald Jones don’t rest, we keep improving on our process and the staff are given lots of training opportunities.

What if you don’t get it right?

Murray: Each construction supervisor has an Area Manager. This adds another set of eyes to each construction phase and of course, when the home is completed they do a final check over to ensure it meets the McDonald Jones benchmark. It’s not about getting the job done, it’s about getting it right.

What’s changed the most in your time with McDonald Jones?

Murray: Firstly it’s the size. I was employee number 44, now there’s over 250 or so. With that comes access to great systems. Plus we get building suppliers calling us with their latest innovations and smarter products. That means the standard for even entry-level homes is so much higher.

What’s your philosophy on completing a home?

Murray: I have to 100% feel “Now that’s a home I would love for my family!” Simply put, we don’t’ say the job is done, until we know it’s what the customer wants.

What makes McDonald Jones work for you?

Murray: This isn’t just giving McDonald Jones a wrap, but it’s simply how it is for me; they’re truly professional. Everything they do; from their systems, to the way they encourage us to look at things from the customer’s point of view is about improving the experience. Professionalism, don’t rest, improve where we can. I’ve seen it work for 8 years and the growth it makes.

Having said that, it’s still about handing over the keys to the new owners at the end of the day, to see them walk through their dream. That’s the magic part. Doing that the team really has something to show for their effort.
