The master bedroom is a luxurious highlight in every McDonald Jones home. Equipped with a lavish ensuite and stylish walk in robe (sure to be an aspiration for those who are in touch with their inner Carrie Bradshaw), the master suite creates the ideal parent’s retreat and the ultimate sanctuary from what can sometimes be a hectic world.

Our experts have brought together their top 5 tips for styling your master suite to create a space that truly reflects who you are and the comfort and sense of relaxation that you would love to enjoy at the end and beginning of every day.

  1. Rest easy in a beautifully dressed bed.
Focus on comfort when it comes to choosing sheets, blankets, doonas and pillows for your bed. Why not - you spend 8 to 10 hours every day catching z’s in bed. That is why it is so important to choose a bed, mattress and complementing bedding that allow you to land in the lap of luxury after a long, stressful day. Choosing the right bedding, even if it does cost a little more, can mean the difference between a good night’s sleep and determine whether you come out of the bedroom door in the morning as the Grinch or with the happy demeanour of a kid in a candy store.

  2. Creating a dreamy colour palette.
The key to the perfect colour palette for your bedroom is not to overdo any single element. Make use of neutral or pastel colours as your base so that you area easily whisked away into a soft land of dreamy sleep. A neutral base provides the perfect backdrop to splashes of colour, contrast and texture brought in through your décor. It also means you can easily change your bedroom style and colour palette as your tastes change and evolve simply by swapping out your accessories.

  3. Create the right mood through lighting.
Create a sense of luxury and a relaxed mood in your master bedroom by incorporating stylish lamps with dimmers and up lights into the room. Lamps also help gently lead you away from the bright lights provided in your living areas into a restful and peaceful night.

  4. Keep your furnishings simple.
To help ensure plenty of space for movement and to avoid clutter in your master bedroom, keep your furnishings simple. The last thing you need at bedtime is a room full of distracting furnishings that make you feel crowded or keep your mind actively thinking. Make the décor you use really stand out - for example, you could incorporate a large ornate wall mirror, beautiful dresser, stylish occasional chair or functional yet sophisticated bedside tables.

  5. Use the right curtains.
The curtains you choose for your bedroom will add to the overall look of the space. If your walls are painted in a dark colour palette, choose light toned curtains to add contrast and drama to the space. If your walls are painted in a lighter tone, complement them with slightly darker toned curtains. You can also choose to have curtains with two layers, one for blocking out the ambient at night and sheer curtains that let the light in during the day, while providing some privacy. Just make sure your curtains match the colour palette you have chosen for the rest of your master suite.
